Choosing your squeeze bluffs

A good squeeze bluff blocks your opponents' big hands and plays badly as a three-way call. Hands that play well multiway would rather call.

Updated October 2026

Our order of priority

In order, the hands we squeeze as bluffs:

  1. Weak suited aces (A5s to A2s). The ace blocks AA and AK, and the hand keeps equity when you get called.
  2. Suited kings (KTs, K9s). At a mixed frequency, mostly against late opens. QTs and JTs bluff only from the SB against a CO open, from 50bb up; the BB calls them.
  3. Offsuit hands with blockers (A5o, A4o, KJo, QJo). Only from the blinds and at a low frequency: called three-way out of position, they lose a lot.

What we do not squeeze as a bluff

Suited connectors (76s, 65s) and small pairs are not bluffs. They realise their equity well multiway, above all in the BB, where you close the action at a good price.

Example. The HJ opens, the CO calls, you are in the SB. A4s squeezes as a bluff. 76s folds: from the SB, with the BB still to act, we almost never call.

Strategy tip

A squeeze bluff is a hand that blocks, not a hand that plays well.

help Frequently Asked Questions

Why squeeze A5s rather than 76s? expand_more

A5s blocks AA and AK, the hands that 4-bet you, and keeps equity when called. 76s blocks nothing and realises its equity better by calling three-way.

Can I squeeze an offsuit hand as a bluff? expand_more

Only from the blinds and at a low frequency: A5o, A4o, KJo, QJo. In position we do not bluff-squeeze offsuit hands.

What about small pairs against an open and a call? expand_more

From 50bb up, call them in position or in the BB: they win big when they make a set three-way. At 25bb and below they no longer call: the stack is too short to set-mine. From the SB they usually fold.
