Squeezing by seat (6-max)

Your seat mostly changes what you do with medium hands: in position you can call from 25bb up, from the SB almost never, in the BB you call often.

Updated October 2026

Three seats, three ways to play medium hands

In position (CO, BTN). Keep the same value. Drop the offsuit bluffs and cut the suited bluffs by about a quarter. Pairs and suited hands would rather call: you will play the flop with position. That holds from 50bb up. At 25bb only pairs 77+ and suited broadways flat (BTN against a HJ open: 99 to 77, AJs, ATs, KQs, KJs, KTs, QJs, QTs, JTs); at 15 to 20bb it is shove or fold.

From the SB. Squeeze or fold, almost never call. The BB behind you can still raise, and you would play out of position against two players. Squeeze at the top size (6 to 6.5 times the open).

In the BB. You close the action at a good price. From 50bb up, suited connectors, small pairs and suited one-gappers call instead of squeezing. At 25bb, 22 to 66, 54s, Q9s and the one-gappers J9s to 64s fold; at 15 to 20bb the BB flats only 77+, suited aces and suited broadways, so T9s to 65s stop calling too.

A special case: the SB calls a BTN open

This is the widest spot for the BB. The SB's call is often weak and capped, and at these stakes it is often a recreational player (see the guide on adjusting to opponents).

Strategy tip

The more a call earns you, the less you need to squeeze your medium hands.

help Frequently Asked Questions

Can I call from the SB against an open and a call? expand_more

Almost never. The BB behind can still raise, and you would play out of position against two players. From the SB it is squeeze or fold.

Why fewer bluffs in position? expand_more

Because calling earns money in position: pairs and suited hands play the flop well when you act last. That holds from 50bb up; at 25bb only pairs 77+ and suited broadways call, and at 15 to 20bb it is shove or fold. We drop the offsuit bluffs and cut the suited ones by a quarter.

Which hands does the BB call instead of squeezing? expand_more

From 50bb up, suited connectors, small pairs and suited one-gappers: the BB closes the action at a good price, and those hands realise their equity well three-way. At 25bb, 22 to 66, 54s, Q9s and the one-gappers J9s to 64s fold; at 15 to 20bb, T9s to 65s stop calling too.
