Medium Stack Opening Strategy (40-50bb)

Medium stack play at 40-50bb is the transitional phase of tournament poker. You are no longer deep enough for pure speculative play, but you are not yet short enough for push-fold decisions. This in-between zone requires precise range adjustments and a clear understanding of how stack depth changes the value of different hand types. At 40-50bb, opening ranges compress by roughly 3-8%% compared to 100bb across all positions. UTG tightens from 15-18%% to about 13-16%%. HJ goes from 19-22%% to about 17-20%%. This means you should 4-bet or fold more often and flat-call 3-bets less.
