Implied Odds

Implied odds extend the concept of pot odds by accounting for additional money you expect to win on future streets if you hit your draw. They justify calling bets when the immediate pot odds are insufficient but the potential payout is large enough.

Implied odds are what make speculative hands like small pocket pairs and suited connectors profitable in deep-stacked poker. The basic idea is that while your immediate pot odds might not justify calling a bet, the additional chips you expect to win when you complete your draw or hit your hand make the call worthwhile over time. Consider calling with a small pocket pair, hoping to flop a set. The odds of flopping a set are roughly 7.5 to 1 against. If the immediate pot is not laying you those odds, you might still call if you expect to win a much larger pot when you do hit. The deeper the effective stacks, the greater the implied odds because there are more chips behind to win. Several factors influence implied odds. Stack depth is the most important: deep stacks mean more money to win postflop. Position matters because acting last allows you to control the pot and extract maximum value. Your opponent's tendencies are crucial, as a player who cannot fold overpairs gives you massive implied odds with set-mining hands. The board texture also matters, as draws that complete on obvious cards (like a fourth flush card) have reduced implied odds because opponents may not pay off. In tournament poker, implied odds diminish at shorter stack depths. At 20bb effective, there simply are not enough chips behind to justify speculative calls with marginal hands. This is why deep-stack ranges include many more suited connectors and small pairs than short-stack ranges. As stacks shrink throughout a tournament, your hand selection should shift from implied-odds driven to fold-equity driven.

Concrete example

In RangerPro's BTN vs UTG range at 100bb, you will see small pocket pairs like 22-66 as flat calls. These hands rely on implied odds: they flop a set about 12% of the time, but when they do, they can win the opponent's entire stack against overpairs and top pair hands.

help Frequently Asked Questions

When do I have good implied odds? expand_more

You have good implied odds when stacks are deep (60bb+), your draw is hidden (sets, well-disguised straights), your opponent tends to pay off big bets, and your hand has potential to make a very strong holding. Implied odds are poor when stacks are short, draws are obvious, or opponents are capable of folding to large bets.

How do implied odds change at different stack depths? expand_more

At 100bb effective, implied odds are excellent for speculative hands because there are many chips behind to win. At 40-60bb, implied odds are moderate and you should be more selective. Below 25bb, implied odds are minimal because there are not enough chips to justify speculative calls. This is why short-stack ranges focus on high-card strength rather than draw potential.
