Button

The Button (BTN) is the most profitable position at the poker table. The player on the Button acts last postflop on every street, giving them the maximum amount of information before making each decision. It is marked by the dealer button chip.

The Button is the single most important position in poker. Acting last on every postflop street provides an enormous informational advantage: you see what every opponent does before deciding your own action. This positional edge allows you to play a significantly wider range of hands profitably compared to early positions. In a 6-Max MTT, the Button opening range is typically the widest at the table, often around 45-50% of all hands at 100 big blinds deep. This includes hands that would be unprofitable to open from earlier positions, such as small suited connectors, weak suited aces, and offsuit broadway hands. The reason these hands become profitable is the combination of fold equity (you only face the blinds) and positional advantage postflop. From the Button, you are in a constant battle with the players in the blinds. The blinds are forced to defend without positional advantage, so even when they call or 3-bet, you retain the edge of acting last. This dynamic is the foundation of blind stealing strategy. Button play also adapts heavily to stack depth. At 100bb, you can open very wide and play a flexible postflop strategy. At 30bb, your opens become more polarized because a 3-bet from the blinds would put you in a tough spot with marginal hands. At 15bb and below, button play transitions into push-fold territory where you shove a wide range to maximize fold equity. Mastering Button play is arguably the highest-leverage improvement most players can make. Adding just a few extra hands to your Button opening range, played well postflop, can significantly boost your overall win rate.

help Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Button the best position in poker? expand_more

The Button acts last on every postflop street (flop, turn, river), which provides maximum information before each decision. You see whether opponents check (showing weakness) or bet (showing strength) before deciding your action. This informational edge makes marginal hands profitable and allows you to control the pot size effectively.

How wide should I open from the Button at different stack depths? expand_more

At 100bb, open around 45-50% of hands. At 40-60bb, tighten slightly to around 40% because 3-bets become more threatening. At 20-30bb, open around 35-40% with a plan for facing 3-bet shoves. Below 15bb, transition to a push-fold strategy and shove around 40-50% of hands.
